As with the majority of visitors to our town, you are most likely to come by car. The main highway on Cape Cod is US Route 6 that runs east-west from Provincetown, MA to Bishop, CA.
From Boston and North of Cape Cod:
- Take Route 93 South to Route 3 South. Route 3 South ends at the Sagamore Bridge at the Cape Cod Canal. Crossing over the Sagamore Bridge* puts you onto Route 6 East.
- Follow Route 6 to Exit 9. Exit 9 is a clover-leaf exit.
- Exit 9A directs you onto Route 134 South heading towards Dennisport, West Dennis and
most of South Dennis. Take this exit to the Dennis Chamber Information Center located at the corner of Route 134 and Route 28!
- Exit 9B directs you onto Route 134 North heading towards the north side of South Dennis, Dennis Village and East Dennis.
*In October of 2006, the Sagamore Bridge Rotary was officially removed from the roadway and the new "fly-over? route opened to all traffic coming on and off Cape Cod. See the traffic at the Sagamore Bridge now by clicking here: http://www.capecodlivecam.com/sagamore.shtml .
Time: With normal traffic the ride from Boston to Dennis takes 1¾ hours. Typically summer traffic is much heavier and can extend the travel time to 3 hours+. When planning your trip to Dennis keep in mind that traffic coming ?on-Cape? is heaviest on Saturday afternoons in the summer season. When leaving or going ?off-Cape,? traffic is heaviest on Saturday mornings.
From Western MA:
- Take Interstate 90 East (a.k.a the Mass Turn Pike) to Exit 11A onto I-495 East (NH/Maine/Cape Cod exit).
- I-495 will merge into Route 25 East and lead you to the Bourne Bridge/Route 28. Continue on Route 25 East over the Bourne Bridge.
- On the Cape-side at the base of the bridge is a Bourne Rotary**. Enter the rotary and take the third right (just before you would swing back around over the bridge) onto Sandwich Road.
- Follow Sandwich Road approximately 2 miles to a traffic light. Turn right at the traffic light onto the Mid Cape Connector. This road will merge onto Route 6 East.
- Follow Route 6 to Exit 9. Exit 9 is a clover-leaf exit.
- Exit 9A directs you onto Route 134 South heading towards Dennisport, West
Dennis and most of South Dennis. Take this exit to the Dennis Chamber Information Center located at the corner of Route 134 and Route 28!
- Exit 9B directs you onto Route 134 North heading towards the north side of South Dennis, Dennis Village and East Dennis.
From Providence and all points South:
- Take Route 195 East to Exit 22A, the Cape Cod/Route 25 East exit.
- Route 25 East leads you to the Bourne Bridge/Route 28. Continue on Route 25 East over the Bourne Bridge.
- On the Cape-side at the base of the bridge is a Bourne Rotary**.

Where is Main Street, Dennis, MA? Main Street in the Town of Dennis is located in the village of South Dennis. It runs north-south and is to the west and parallel of Route 134. Routes 6A and 28 are also referred to as Main Street within the villages each transects. Route 6A runs east-west on the "north-side" of Dennis through the villages of Dennis and East Dennis. Route 28 runs through West Dennis and Dennisport. When told your destination is on Main Street, be sure to verify in which village.
I am driving East on Route 28, but the signs read South? Or, I am driving West on Route 28, but the signs read North? Route 28 is a nominally north-south route running from the New Hampshire state line, through Boston and the western reaches of Norfolk and Plymouth counties, and then west-to-east on Cape Cod, finally ending as a south-north section between Chatham and Orleans. Its original form was as a New England interstate route and it continues northward as NH 28. At a length of nearly 152 miles, Route 28 is the longest state highway in Massachusetts.
